Hello and welcome back to another edition of THE POSTCARD, Unregistered’s fortnightly roundup of recommendations.
Thoughts, tools, and treats
This week’s issue is about recurrence.
Being a regular
A lovely post about the art of being a regular by Riley Harper. His advice: „You don’t act entitled, you show up often, tip well, and you respect the flow of the place. If you do that, over time, you’ll find yourself taken care of in ways that don’t show up on a receipt.“
Reading habits
Jancee Dunn offers some nice suggestions on how to rekindle your love of reading. She cites Nancy Pearl, who says that „if you’re under 50, you should give every book about 50 pages before you quit. If you’re older than that, subtract your age from 100 to see how many pages to read before setting it aside.“
The infinite bookshop
M. E. Rothwell: „Why does he visit them incessantly, day after day, week after week, making pilgrimage in every free hour available to him? Why is he a regular visitor to Blackwell’s, Waterstones, Cooper’s Rare Books, why has he become known to the staff of Rare Birds in Stockbridge, Golden Hare Books on St Stephen Street, even the antiquarian bookshop on West Port, as the man who visits for hours at a time, but never buys anything?“
Everyday courage
Alex Budak draws a helpful distinction between „the heroic“ and „everyday courage.“ The latter includes welcoming dissenting views or speaking up „against groupthink or misconduct—even when others stay silent.“ It requires „pre-commit before a crisis occurs.“
J’accusative
I wish I'd come up with that headline. If you like grammar, you will love this article by Rafaël Newman.
Noteworthy
„The time I used to spend on Twitter I now spend on Substack, and my life is much better for it.“
—David Brooks, New York Times opinion columnist
A mystery link leading into the unknown
The simplest things...
... are difficult to make.
As always,
